Jaw Physiotherapy

JAW PHYSIOTHERAPY
KAAKFYSIOTHERAPIE
By mandibulair or jaw complaints we mean all complaints that have to do with the malfunction of the chewing system.

CAUSES OF MANDIBULAIR COMPLAINTS

A common cause for the development of jaw complaints is excessive or incorrect use of the jaws (overload), for example due to::

  • grinding teeth and jaw clamps (this is holding the jaws firmly together during the day and night)
  • excessive chewing gum use and nail biting
  • other mouth habits such as lip biting, cheek biting, pen biting or tongue pressing against the teeth or palate.
  • an ill-fitting dentures or incomplete dentition

JAW JOINT

Sometimes stress plays a role or there are other physical disorders ('biting through' or 'biting'). However, the problems can also come from the jaw joint. There is a cartilage disc (discus) in the jaw joint, which can be shifted (sounds in the joint) or cause the joint to block.

The dental physiotherapy treatment includes instructions on how to properly use and relax the mouth. You often receive exercises to do at home.
